Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity

Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity

Coeliac disease can manifest in both childhood and adulthood and is associated with digestive symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating or gas, diarrhoea or constipation. Extradigestive symptoms include anaemia, depression, miscarriage, cramps, migraines, chronic fatigue, bone or muscle pain and arthritis, among others.

Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity is increasingly present in society, characterised by gluten-dependent digestive and extra-digestive symptoms that manifest in patients with negative coeliac disease test results.

Therefore, the symptoms are the same as those of coeliac individuals, despite generally not finding positive results during diagnostic tests.

It is now more common to find people who, despite having digestive and non-digestive symptoms associated with gluten, experience a significant improvement when they remove it from their diet. In fact, according to the latest research, around 6% of the population may be sensitive to gluten without having been diagnosed with coeliac disease, and this percentage could even be higher.
